A Glimpse into the Past: The Lisbon Buckeye, October 12, 1895

In the fall of 1895, The Lisbon Buckeye newspaper reported on a remarkable community effort to rebuild the barn of a local family after a devastating fire. The headline read: "Neighbors to the Rescue: Barn Raised in a Day"

According to the article, over 40 men from surrounding farms in Center Township gathered early on a crisp Saturday morning. By sundown, a brand-new timber-framed structure stood where ashes had smoldered just days before. Women of the community prepared hot meals, and children played while the men worked — turning tragedy into an event of unity.

The same issue featured updates on court proceedings, a new business opening on Market Street, and personal notices — including wedding announcements, obituaries, and “Who Visited Whom” columns that give us priceless insight into daily life.

This single issue, like many preserved in the archives of the Columbiana County Archives & Research Center, offers more than facts — it brings to life the spirit and resilience of a community over 125 years ago.
